The mansion which is now known as The Blue Elephant Governor Mansion Phuket was once known as Phra Pitak Chinpracha Mansion and has a history going back over 100 years to the days of tin mining in Phuket.
Located on the corner of Krabi Road and Satun Road next to the Chinpracha Mansion, the building is worth the trip in itself.
The first time I visited the Blue Elephant, the restaurant wasn't open as it only opens for a short time for lunch, closing for the afternoon and re-opening again in the evening. So I took a coffee at the bar which was was just opening and asked to take a look around.
The mansion lies set back from the road with a large lawn available for large gatherings such as Staff Parties or Wedding Receptions and what a backdrop for the photos! They took me upstairs to see the function room which is available for booking too.
The restaurant offers both indoor air-conditioned seating as well as the terrace style seating at the front of the building.
So after my unsuccessful first visit, my second visit was a planned lunch stop! Taking a seat on the front of the building to enjoy the view I was surprised to see in the menu, which offered a wide range of food, that their chef was in fact a 'chefess'!
"Mrs. Nooror Somany Steppe who was born in Thailand’s Chachoengsao province where her sister owned a small restaurant. During this time and her later years of living overseas she also acquired a strong proficiency in creating new Thai dishes with the authentic taste of traditional Thai cuisine". The menu includes both local Phuket dishes such as 'Moo Hong,' as well as more international favourites like Spare Ribs. The prices are inevitably in line with 5 star hotel prices, so don't expect to get your Pad Thai for 30 baht here! However the portions were large, well presented and tasty. The terrace tables were perfect to sit and watch a group of photographers taking photos of a wedding couple and group all dressed up in traditional Phuket attire, so with this distraction plus the fact that, as usual, I was too busy eating, I forgot to take any photos of the food! Sorry, maybe next time!
If you want to choose in advance take a look at their online and downloadable menu.
