I remember a day trip to Ton Sai Waterfall in Thalang. It was late 1987 and we drove the jeep out of the waterfall on what was a very overgrown track through fallen down branches and low hanging spider webs that had me squealing when the resident spider was still at home. We ploughed through and ended it up in a rubber and pineapple plantation.
It was the first time I had ever seen a pineapple plant and at that time I didn't know that Phuket had it's own species of Pineapple. Commonly grown in rubber plantations as a way of making money in the 3 year period before the rubber can be harvested, the Phuket Pineapple is an important part of Phuket's agricultural industry, however it is only recently that the fruit has been labelled as a Phuket Geographical Indicator. For me it remains an indicator of my first days of adventure in Phuket, and also as an indicator of how things have changed and also, in a way, how they have remained the same. Despite the end of Tin Mining and the growth of Tourism, Phuket still earns money from agriculture. Even in 1987 the owner had quite a splendid house!
I remember how expensive pineapples were in England and when I arrived here in Phuket in1987 you could often buy a pineapple for 2 or 3 baht! You would see them piled up by the roadside waiting for a buyer. I guess since then land has been taken over by the tourist industry and housing developments leaving little space to grow them now, pushing the price up to around 20 baht a fruit. The price always being at it's highest during Chinese festivals when the fruit is used in worship.
Phuket's pineapples are famed for their crispness, sweet taste and small core making it possible to eat almost through to the centre. The fruit is long with deep 'eyes', pale green leaves with a reddish strip in the centre and red thorns along the edge of the leaf. In 2012 there are still around 40 plantations in Phuket covering 1800 Rai (around 720 Acres) of land making a turn over of some 80 million baht per year.

ภูเกตเป็นแหล่งปลูกสับปะรด ที่มีชื่อเสียงมานาน เนื่องจากสับปะรดที่ปลูกในภูเก็ตมีลักษณะพิเศษเฉพาะตัว คือ เนื้อจะหวานกรอบ กลิ่นหอม มีเยื่อใยน้อย จึงเ็ป็นที่ต้องการของผู้บริโภคมาก ความมีชื่อเสียงนี้ทำให้คนทัวไปเรียกสับปะรดที่มาจากจังหวัดภูเก็ตว่า สับปะรดภูเก็ต ตามชื่อแหล่งปลูก
การปลูกสับปะรดบนเกาะภูเก็ตสามารถปลูกได้ตลอตปี โดยเกษตรกรนิยมปลูกแซมในสวนยางพาราตั้งแต่เริ่มปลูกจนกระทั่งต้นยางอายุได้ 3 ปี ทําให้มีรายได้ก่อนที่ะได้รับผลผลิตจากยางพารา
