Built in 1930, on what is now Tanon Montri between Tanon Phang Nga and Tanon Talang, the Post and Telegraph Office is the oldest remaining Government Building in Phuket, built in the Sino-Portuguese style with the name made of moulded lime.
In 1942 during bad flooding in Phuket, Bang Yai Canal overspilt its banks breaking the road into 2 sections and turning the area into what was almost a sea port enabling boats to be able to tether up in front of the Post Office before continuing by rickshaw into town and maybe even spending a night at the On On Hotel. To reach Phuket in the past, people coming from Bangkok would have take a train south to Surat Thani, travel to Krabi and take a boat to Phuket where they could also access Phang Nga by ferry at the point where Sarasin Bridge is built today.
The benificiaries of the late Prapitak Chinpracha planned to fill in the canal to enable sale of the land however the local adminstration department requested that the part that had been the original canal was left unfilled to enable rain water to drain back into the sea..The remaining land was sold to the Thavornwong and Ngantawi Families for tin mining and later the area was to become the first shopping center in Phuket. 'Soon Garn Ka Lertpokarak' ศูนย์การค้าเลิศโภคารักษ์, which contained a hotel, cinema, bowling alley and a variety of shops. When I arrived in Phuket the Pearl Bowling Alley was one of the few available activities in Phuket and both locals and tourists would try their hand on what by then had come a rather warn out bowling lane. The Pearl Hotel still remains however the bowling alley is now closed.

In 1981 the old Post Office almost came to its end when a plan to pull it down to make way for a new larger Post Office was announced, however the Fine Arts Department refused to grant permission due to the historical importance of the building and in 1994 it was proposed that the building should be converted into a museum and a larger building be erected next door to serve the public.The museum eventually opened on 14th December 2004.
Inside the museum is a small collection of equipment used by the Post Office over the years as well as a reference library and a collection of old stamps.

The story began when I noticed that I hadn't received any bills for a month and I went to find out why. The answer was that the delivery boy had resigned and they couldn't find anyone else to do it. But it seemed more than that. When I asked for my mail I was told to wait 5 minutes and the Post Office staff disappeared leaving me standing alone in the sorting office behind the main office. Time ticked by and another member of staff appeared asking me what I was waiting for. I told him and he said 'oh wait he will be back soon' so I asked where 'he' had gone. The answer came with a hand motion to the rear of the office 'out there looking for your letters'. After a few minutes I decided to go and see what was happening. To my disbelief I saw a man with two crates sorting letters from one to another. Not wanting to spend the whole day at the post office I decided to help out. Eventually, when we reached the bottom of the crate, I had my mail. So this has been the way of things ever since.
On a trip to pick up some registered mail today I overheard one of the Post Office staff telling a client that the Post office was due to be rebuilt - much needed for sure! In the meantime all registered mail and other letters were being sorted in a different location, just opposite the turning to the Prince of Songkla University. So off I went to that location to pick up my mail.

ลักษณะสถาปัตยกรรม สร้างเป็นอาคารชั้นเดียวคอนกรีตเสริมเหล็ก ทาสีขาว ด้านหน้าเป็นบันไดทางขึ้น 5 ขั้น เสาเป็นสี่เหลี่ยมเซาะร่องห่าง ราวลูกกรงปูนเรียบยาว กรอบหน้าต่างสีโอ๊ค มีหน้าต่างแบบเปิดบานคู่ เหนือบานเปิดเป็นช่องแสงไม้ตารางสี่เหลี่ยมติดกระจกใส ภายในตีฝ้าเพดานไม้ตีชิดทาสีขาว ประตูภายในเปิดปิดบานคู่ลูกฟักไม้ ก่อนถึงหลังคามีแนวกันสาดยื่นเป็นกันสาดคอนกรีตเสริมเหล็กบางๆ ประมาณ 10 เซนติเมตร ยื่นออกมาประมาณ 80 เซนติเมตร หลังคาเป็นทรงปั้นหยา กระเบื้องจีนดินเผาทรงกระบอกผ่าซีก ป้ายหน้าอาคารเขียนด้วยตัวหนังสือแบบเก่าว่า ที่ทำการไปรษณีย์โทรเลข POST & TELEGRAPH OFFICE
มาในปีพ.ศ.2485 เกิดน้ำท่วมใหญ่ในตัวเมืองจังหวัดภูเก็ต น้ำในคลองบางใหญ่ได้เอ่อล้นไหลเข้าท่วมในส่วนด้านหน้าของที่ทำการฯ ไปจนถึงสำนักงานประมง (ปัจจุบัน) ตัดช่วงถนนมนตรีขาดเป็น 2 ช่องคูคลอง กลายเป็นทะเล ชาวบ้านสามารถนำเรือมาจอดเทียบท่าได้ มีทั้งเรือที่มาจากเกาะยาว เกาะสิเหร่ ฯลฯ เพื่อเดินทางต่อไปยังตลาด (บันซ้าน) บริเวณถนนถลาง(ตลาดใหญ่) และตลาดเหนือ บริเวณถนนกระบี่ และถนนวิชิตสงคราม เพื่อทำการซื้อขายกัน
ต่อมาทางกองมรดกของพระพิทักษ์ชินประชามีความประสงค์จะถมที่ดินตรงส่วนนั้นเพื่อขายออกไป เทศบาลได้ขอร้องให้ยกลำคลองไว้เพื่อให้น้ำสามารถไหลผ่านออกสู่ทะเลได้ ที่ดินผืนใหญ่ได้ขายออกไปให้แก่ตระกูลถาวรว่องวงศ์ และงานทวี ทำการขุดหาแร่ดีบุก แล้วจัดสรรเป็นศูนย์การค้าในโอกาสต่อมา ตรงบริเวณโรงแรมเพิร์ลในปัจจุบันที่อยู่ตรงข้ามกับอาคารที่ทำการไปรษณีย์โทรเลขภูเก็ต ซึ่งครั้งหนึ่งเคยเป็นขุมเหมืองก็ถูกพัฒนาเป็นอาคารพาณิชย์ของขุนเลิศโภคารักษ์ในที่สุด ท่านได้พัฒนาพื้นที่ตรงนั้นให้เป็นศูนย์การค้าเลิศโภคารักษ์ นับเป็นศูนย์การค้าแห่งแรกในจังหวัดภูเก็ต จึงจัดได้ว่าบริเวณที่ทำการไปรษณีย์ฯ ในอดีตเป็นพื้นที่ที่มีความเจริญรุ่งเรืองเป็นอย่างมาก
เคยมีความพยามจะทำการรื้อถอนอาคารแห่งนี้มาแล้วครั้งหนึ่งในปีพ.ศ.2524 เมื่อสำนักงานจังหวัดภูเก็ตได้ทำหนังสือถึงสำนักงานไปรษณีย์เขต 8 แจ้งความประสงค์จะขอรื้อถอนอาคารเพื่อสร้างอาคารที่ทำการหลังใหม่ แต่กรมศิลปากรไม่อนุญาตให้รื้อถอน เนื่องจากอาคารดังกล่าวเป็นอาคารที่มีสถาปัตยกรรมเก่าแก่สมควรแก่การอนุรักษ์ไว้ ต่อมาในปีพ.ศ.2537 ได้มีการปรับปรุงอาคารไปรษณีย์ภูเก็ตหลังเก่า จัดสร้างให้เป็นพิพิธภัณฑ์ตราไปรษณียากรภูเก็ตขึ้น เพื่อเป็นที่รวบรวมความรู้เรื่องแสตมป์และการสื่อสารต่างๆ ให้ประชาชนทั่วไปได้เข้ามาศึกษาหาความรู้ โดยเปิดให้เข้าเยี่ยมชมครั้งแรกเมื่อวันที่ 14 ธันวาคม 2547
ภายในส่วนของอาคารพิพิธภัณฑ์ได้จัดแสดงตราไปรษณีย์ยากร หรือดวงตราไปรษณียากรชุดต่างๆ ของประเทศไทยตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ.2494 นอกจากนี้ยังมีการจัดแสดงเครื่องมือเครื่องใช้เกี่ยวกับการสื่อสารของไทยสมัยก่อน ตั้งแต่ครั้งยังเป็นกรมไปรษณีย์โทรเลข อาทิ เครื่องชั่งไปรษณียภัณฑ์แบบตัวเลขรุ่นแรก เครื่องประทับตราไปรษณียากร เครื่องรับส่งสัญญาณโทรสาร ฯลฯ
ห้องด้านหลังภายในพิพิธภัณฑ์ยังจัดเป็นห้องสมุดที่รวบรวมความรู้และเรื่องราวต่างๆ ประวัติความเป็นมาของแสตมป์ทั้งของโลกและของประเทศไทย และความเป็นมาของไปรษณีย์ไทย ฯลฯ หากมาเยี่ยมชมแล้วสนใจจะซื้อของที่ระลึกจากไปรษณีย์ติดไม้ติดมือกลับไปด้วยก็ตามแต่อัธยาศัย http://www.phuketbulletin.co.th/travel/view.php?id=502

There are a few souvenirs for sale including stamps, magnets, keyrings and postcards. I couldn't help being amused by the row of 'Postmen' depicting the different uniforms from the past, starting on the left in 1882, to present day (2012) on the right. The crash helmet now replaces the postman's cap as a motorbike replaces his bicycle.. It seemed that without intention they had also depicted the history of life as, over the years, the importance and popularity of sending letters has changed. It struck me that the model third from the right looked the most over worked of them all, almost out of breath, as maybe in 1974 we were possibly at our peak of using 'mail' and since then with the increasing use of internet the post office has become a less important part of the way we communicate. It is only a couple of years since the last telegraph was sent here in Thailand.
There were also some posters in the museum telling the history of the Post Office in Thailand including some old photographs. One picture caught my eye more than all the others, it was a photograph of a postman in a boat with a mail box collecting post from the residents of the canals in Bangkok. 'Bangkok' and 'Other Places' 2011
However there is one little story that may not go down in the history books, the story of my local Post office.
Last week I decided to make another trip for my missing mail and was horrified but partly amused to see that things had got worse. The sorting office had now spilled out onto the concrete floor of the car park protected from rain and sun by a mixture of hanging signs and cloth. Heaps of mail lay scattered around, albeit in what was some kind of order as I got my mail in just a few seconds!
