If you are taking a stroll down Soi Romanee you are sure to notice a temple roof at the end of the road, next time walk on and take a look at the temple too! Strangely I have lived here for years and never been inside the temple until this year, but that's the way things are when you live somewhere, how many Londoners have ever taken a photo of Big Ben?
To visit the temple just continue walking until you reach Tanon Dibuk and look for the entrance.
I arrived late afternoon and the temple sparkled against a deep blue sky, really quite breathtaking. The temple, built in around1880, was originally know as Wat Klang because of its location in the centre (Klang) of Phuket Town. Many auspicious ceremonies have been held at the temple and in 1953 the name was officially changed to Wat Mongkol Nimit, mongkol being the Thai word for auspicious. However many of the locals will still refer to the temple by its original name.
Within the grounds of the temple are various buildings including a Jeddi and several traditional buildings which make an interesting part of the visit. Sadly the temple gate was closed due to the fact that I got there late and so I didn't get in to see the golden Buddha inside.
วัดมงคลนิมิตรเป็นพระอารามหลวงชั้นตรี ชนิดสามัญ ตั้งอยู่เลขที่ 3 ตำบลตลาดใหญ่ อำเภอเมืองภูเก็ต จังหวัดภูเก็ต บริเวณใกล้เคียง ทิศเหนือติดต่อกับเขตสวนของเอกชน ทิศใต้ติดต่อกับถนนดีบุก ทิศตะวันออกติดต่อกับถนนเทพกระษัตรี ทิศตะวันตกติดต่อกับถนนเยาวราช
ลักษณะพื้นที่โดยทั่วไปของบริเวณที่ตั้งวัดเป็นที่ราบเรียบ ตั้งอยู่กลางใจเมืองภายในเขตเทศบาล ประชาชน นิยมเรียกวัดนี้ว่า “วัดกลาง” เพราะว่าตั้งอยู่ใจกลางเมือง วัดนี้สร้างขึ้นเมื่อประมาณ พ.ศ.2423 ในสมัยที่เกาะถลางยังเป็นมณฑลภูเก็จสันนิษฐานกันว่าเป็นเจ้าเมืองเป็นผู้สร้างและได้รับพระราชทานวิสุงคามสีมา ประมาณ พ.ศ.2428เหตุที่เปลี่ยนชื่อ “วัดกลาง” มาเป็น “วัดมงคลนิมิตร” เพราะวัดนี้อยู่ในใจกลางเมือง ทั้งในสมัยเมื่อยังเป็นมณฑลภูเก็ตอยู่ ทางราชการใช้เป็นสถานที่ทำพิธีถือน้ำพระพิพัฒน์สัตยาทุก ๆ ปี และเป็นที่ทำพิธีน้ำมูรธาภิเษก ในรัชกาลที่ 4,6 และ 7 ตลอดจนรัฐพิธีและราชพิธีต่าง ๆ ก็ทำที่วัดนี้มาโดยตลอด มายกเลิกเสียเมื่อคราวยุบเลิกมณฑลจึงนับว่าเป็นวัดที่ทางราชการและประชาชน นิยมนับถือว่าเป็นวัดที่ให้มงคลเกิดขึ้น ทางราชการจึงได้ขอเปลี่ยนนามวัดนี้ใหม่ว่า “วัดมงคลนิมิตร” และได้รับพระราชทานยกขึ้นเป็นพระอารามหลวงในปี พ.ศ.2496
