This is one of my favourite restaurants in Phuket and has been so since I came here in 1987. Over the years it has changed very little, infact Ao Chalong has probably changed more with it's new Pier and increasing number of boats. My January 1987 edition of the Lonely Planet Guide said "a good fresh seafood place..It used to be out on a pier over the bay itself, but is now housed in a new enclosed restaurant, not as cheap as the old location". Kan Eang 2's predecessor, Kan Eang 1, now known as Kan Eang@Pier due to it's location at the entrance to Chalong Pier, has recently had a face-lift making it a higher class restaurant, ideal for special occasions, but inevitably more expensive and maybe less 'relaxed' than Kan Eang 2.
It is a little harder to find as it is not on the road down to the Pier but at the end of a much smaller road that leads down to the beach. If you take the road from Ha Yaek Circle towards Phuket Town past Chalong Police Station then, the road lies opposite a business called PK Law which can easily be seen due to it's sign (on left of photo if you are coming from Rawai) look over to the right and you will see the Kan Eang 2 sign at the end of the row of shop houses, just follow the road to the very end and you will see the restaurant sign (above top).
There is an enclosed area but most visitors tend to choose a beach side table or one of the small grass roofed salas. I usually choose a beach side table as the view over Ao Chalong is beautiful, especially at sunset!
