As the story goes, around 1890 in the area that the shrine stands today was a inlet from the nearby sea.
One day a Chinese man came ashore in a Junk bringing with him an image of the Emperor Guan Yu.
The man built a small house and was seen to pay respects to the image of Emperor Guan Yu.
After some time the Chinese man disappeared and the local villagers saw that he had left behind the
image of Emperor Guan Yu. The villagers continued to worship the image and eventually gathered
together enough money to build a better shrine.

Guan Yu or Kuan Yuis also known as Kuan Ti and is often referred to as the God of War due to his military successes however he is revered for his loyality and justice and is worshipped as a guardian deity.

Later, in the  year of 1952  Emperor Guan Yu came into the dreams of one of the villagers, and from
that day on he became very successful and eventually restored the shrine once again.

In 2006 the temple curators decided to hold the first Vegetarian Festival to be held at the shrine, and
continued to do so until present time.Three years later in 2009 the temple was seen to be too small for
holding the Vegetarian Festival rituals and so it was decided that a new Shrine should be built in the
original site.

The old shrine was moved to a temporary building alongside the new construction work until the new
Shrine is completed in 2012.

An artisan works on murals and ornaments to decorate the temple. Self taught he explains that his
ability comes from the heart and the love of his work.  He has just 2 or 3 helpers and a lot of work to
complete, including the dragon decoration on the roof, murals inside the shrine and dragon columns
at the entrance.
