The On On Hotel is Phuket's oldest hotel. Situated in Tanon Phang Nga close to Sarn Jao Saeng Tam and just opposite the Thai Farmers Bank.
The Hotel was built in 1929 and was featured in the Leonardo DiCaprio film The Beach but it has inevitably started to look it's age. It has had a mixture of good and bad reviews on websites such as Trip Advisor but has survived the hard times Phuket faced during Tsunami 2004. So it may not be a surprise to hear that in 2012 the Hotel was sold and the new owner has confirmed that the name and façade will remain unchanged and that renovations will be made to the interior. In May 2012 the hotels longest staying resident had to be removed and sent to hospital due to his health conditions as well as the imminent renovation work, he had spent 20 years at hotel. Visit Phuket Gazette for the full story.
In 2013 the hotel reopened as The Memory at On On and offers everything from suites to dormitories. See my blog update to see how the On On hotel looks in June 2013
During renovations the Kopi de Phuket coffee shop is till serving coffee and so it is possible to sit and watch renovation work or stay inside the shop and keep out of the dust! Internet available. In 2013 the Hotel is open and Kopi de Phuket has moved out, when I visited there was no restaurant facility but I think they were working on something to the right of the Hotel so will be back with more information soon!
