Bahn Khun Dteng Gok SaeNgor บ้านคุณเต้งก๊ก แซ่หงอ

Hidden behind an unattractive wall behind the Siam Commercial Bank in Tanon Rassada is the home of Khun Dteng Gok Ngor. The mansion now lies abandoned and is yet another symbol of what has until recently been Phuket's forgotten past. It is sad to see such a beautiful building left uncared for. The gate stays open it seems and it is easy to walk in and take photos of the exterior although I would love to have been able to go inside!

Just opposite the entrance is the Ayudhya Bank Building that won an architectural award some years ago. The bank has a road that runs around it, the home for what used to be Phuket Shopping Centre but is now an apartment block. I remember shopping there many times in the days before Lotus, Big C and Central! 

In Thailand's past certain governments promoted 'Thainess' and forced long standing immigrants, be they Chinese, Europeann, Indians or Muslims to take on Thai names and Thai culture including the Buddhist religion. This along with years of mixed marriages has probably been the cause of 'forgetting the old ways' and a few years ago little of other cultures could be seen street-side.

When I first arrived in Phuket you saw few tourists in Phuket Old Town, things are much different now! In the last few years, probably due to the increasing number of Chinese tourists, Phuket's Chinese culture has made a come back with the renovation of Mansions (like the one above), shop houses, temples, promotion of Chinese Festivals and the revival of Peranakan Culture. Although this has concentrated on Phuket Old Town and it's Chinese history there are now efforts to promote Halal foods and support Muslim culture with the hope of attracting visitors from the Middle-East, so once again Phuket is returning to the mixed culture society that it once had when the first sea traders arrived on it's shores around over 1,000 years ago .

เมื่อสืบประวัติแล้วพบว่าพระโป้เซ้งไต่เต่โดยชาติกำเนิดของท่าน แท้จริงสืบเผ่าพันธุ์จากกษัตริย์ไท้โปว๋ แห่งราชวงศ์โจว ในยุคสมัยจ้านกว๋อ ยุคนั้นมีการรบพุ่งอยู่ตลอด บรรพบุรุษของท่านได้สร้างที่มั่นอาศัยอยู่ที่แคว้นอู๋ ปัจจุบันคือบริเวณอำเภอเจียงซู จนล่วงรุ่นที่ 31 จึงได้เปลี่ยนจากแซ่เดิมมาเป็นแซ่อู๋ หรือคำฮกเกี้ยนว่า หงอ จวบจนปัจจุบัน ต่อมาลูกหลานแซ่หงอส่วนหนึ่งอพยพลงมาเรื่อย ส่วนหนึ่งมาตั้งรกรากที่บ้านป๋ายเก๋ว อำเภอต่งอาน เมืองจ่วนจิว มณฑลฮกเกี้ยน โดยประวัติบรรพบุรุษของท่านประกอบสัมมาชีพสุจริต มีคุณธรรมจนเป็นที่ทราบกันดี
